TRS Formula Student Harness

There are a few different options for Formula Student depending on the seat position and if you are using a HANS device. All of the TRS harnesses for Formula Student harnesses will be custom made and require alterations (which are done by TRS) so you will need to complete a Bespoke Harness Form (which we will supply you).

All of these TRS Harness' listed here meet the following requirements:

  • FIA Homologated 8853:2016 (because of how this homologation works it does limit which options are available for each harness)
  • 6pt
  • 3" Shoulder Straps (For Non-HANS)
  • 2" or 3-2" Shoulder Straps (For HANS)
  • 2" Crotch Straps
  • 2" Lap Straps (3" are available if required, please email or call for details, however 2" is recommended).
  • A single metal-to-metal latch that releases all straps
  • Tilt Lock Adjusters on the Lap Straps
  • Available with Pull-Up Lap Straps (all of these are also available with Pull-Down Lap Straps)

Please read through the options below before contacting us about your requirements.

Upright Seat Position (No HANS Device)

If you are using a normal seat position as defined in the FSUK regulations and are not using a using a HANS Device then you can use either a TRS Pro or TRS Pro Single Seater harness. The main difference between a Pro and a Pro Single Seater is how the crotch straps attach to the other straps. With a TRS Pro the crotch straps are tied to a ‘T Bar’ which plugs into the quick release latch. A TRS Pro Single Seater harness however the shoulder and lap straps go through a hoop which is at the end of the crotch strap. This can be more comfortable for drivers in a tight cockpit/seat.

Upright Seat Position (With HANS Device)

If the driver is in the upright seat position (as defined by FSUK regulations) and is wearing a HANS Device then they can use a TRS International Pro harness. This harness has 2" shoulder, lap and crotch straps.

Alternatively you can utilise a TRS Pro or TRS Single Seater harness as both of these are available with 3-2” shoulder straps (if you opt for 3-2” shoulder straps then the driver needs to be wearing a HANS device. 3-2” straps means that the straps are 3” around the quick release latch and become 2” as they go over the drivers shoulders).

Reclined Seat Position (No HANS Device)

If the driver is going to be seated in a reclined position (as defined by the FSUK regulations) and the driver will not be wearing a HANS device then you can use the TRS Pro Single Seater harness. You will need to note on the order Bespoke Harness Form that you require 2 sets of crotch straps (this harness is not available with adjusters on the crotch straps).

Reclined Seat Position (With HANS Device)

If you have the driver in a reclined seat position (as defined by the FSUK regulations) and the driver is wearing a HANS device then you can use the TRS International Pro harness. This harness has 2” shoulder, lap and crotch straps. The crotch straps are available with tilt adjusters (please make sure you specify that you require this on the Bespoke Harness Form).

If you wished then you could also use a TRS Pro Single Seater harness with 3-2" shoulder straps (3-2” straps means that the straps are 3” around the quick release latch and become 2” as they go over the drivers shoulders). You will need to specify on the Bespoke Harness Form that you will require 2 sets of crotch straps.

What is HANS/FHR?

HANS stands for Head And Neck Support, FHR stands for Frontal Head Restraint. HANS and FHR are exactly the same thing and are interchangeable (HANS is more common in North America and also refers to a brand name, FHR is more common in Europe and is a generic term). A HANS/FHR device is a device which fits either over the shoulders or around the torso of the driver and connects to the helmet. In the event of a crash the HANS/FHR device supports the drivers head and limits the possibility of neck/head injury.

It's important to know if a driver is going to be using a HANS/FHR device when selecting a harness because it has an effect on the width of the shoulder straps. If the driver is not wearing a HANS/FHR device then they are required to have 3" width shoulder straps. If they are wearing a HANS/FHR device (that sits on the shoulders) then a 2" width shoulder strap is better suited as it sits on the HANS/FHR device better (although they can use 3" if they wish).
