MSA Rule Changes for Fire Extinguishers

PLEASE NOTE: The MSA are changing the regulations for fire extinguishers. From 1st January 2018 all new builds will be required to be fitted with FIA homologated extinguishers. All cars will be required to be fitted with FIA homologated extinguishers by 1st January 2022.

This has been done to make the selection of fire extinguishers a lot simpler for competitors especially those who compete in Europe. The range of products available will be slim lined over the next few years. Here we are main discussing Lifeline but the same applies to the other manufacturers.

The MSA are changing their regulations on Fire Extinguishers bringing it in-line with the FIA (see bulletin attached). That means that no manufacturers are producing 2.25ltr extinguishers after 1st January 2018. All extinguishers will have to be compliant with the FIA list 16 or 52 (available for the FIA website). Basically though what this means is:

Plumbed in systems - Only extinguishers from the FIA list 16 or 52 (available from the FIA website) are permitted. For AFFF (Zero 2000) only systems over 4ltr are currently listed. For Novec (Zero 360) only systems over 3KG are listed.

Handheld - AFFF is now minimum of 2.4 litres, Novec is now minimum of 2.0KG. This only applies if there is no other extinguisher in the car.

The following products are being discontinued by Lifeline:

  • All 2.25 AFFF extinguishers
  • 3.12 Dual chamber extinguisher
  • 4ltr Aluminium Mechanical extinguisher

In addition to this:

  • All lifeline kits produced after 1st January 2018 will be supplied with 8mm nozzles, tubing etc.
  • Spares/accessories for the 6mm and 10mm will be available until 1st January 2022.
  • Zero Zero have been renamed as Zero 36₂0.

We have taken every precaution to ensure that the information here is as accurate as possible. However you should also consult the MSA Blue Book or your championship scrutineer if you are unsure about anything listed here. To our knowledge championships/categories which currently do not require an extinguisher are not effected.
