SKF Bearings

Over the past few years Raceparts have provided lots of Formula Student teams with a variety of different SKF bearings. These bearings can be used for applications such as wheel bearing, suspension, drivetrain, steering and many other vehicle systems.

When selecting the type of bearing you require it is important to consider:

  • Dynamic behaviour
  • Lubricant and seals
  • Type
  • Size
  • Internal clearance and load
  • Installation and removal methods

The dynamic behaviour of the bearing is the first item to consider because it has implications for the rest of the bearing. The dynamic behaviour includes but is not limited to:

  • Available space
  • Loads (magnitude and direction)
  • Misalignment
  • Precision and sriffness
  • Speeds
  • Operating temperature
  • Vibration levels

Once these factors have been calculated/specified then the type and size of bearing required can be determined. By specifying the clearance required for the internal dimension of the bearing you will be able to narrow down the list of suitable bearings. An often overlooked consideration is how you will install and remove the item. Taking consideration of this during the design phase will help when it comes to installation and maintenance.

Lubrication and the seals have a critical role in the performance of the bearing. The lubricant will reduce friction (and the amount of energy which is lost in the process), reduce the amount of corrosion, prolong the service life of the bearing.

To find more information on selecting the correct bearing and the SKF range please visit the SKF website or they produce an extremely helpful app which is available for both Android and iphone from your usual app supplier. Once you have selected the bearing you require be sure to email or call us with the details to receive a quote with the Formula Student discount.
